Coach and Former-Player Face-Off as Amherst Spikes Mount Holyoke

It may not be as big as Roy Williams meeting Dean Smith, or a Mike Kryzewski-Bobby Knight showdown, but the volleyball match between Amherst and Mount Holyoke carries a lot ofweight with it.

Angela Povoli graduated from Amherst in 1995 and spent the last year as the Hitchcock Fellow in her alma mater's athletics department. As a former captain, it was only logical that she assistant coach the volleyball team, under the direction of Sue Everden. But the Fellowship ended in July, and Povoli moved down Route 116 to Pioneer Valley rival Mount Holyoke as the Lyons' head coach. The two teams battled it out last night.

While Amherst prevailed in the end, 3-0 (15-6, 15-7, 15-4), Everden is impressed with what her "pupil" has accomplished in the Mount Holyoke program. It took the a great hitting game from Laura Becvar '97 and key kills from Nell Berens '99 to fully tame the Lyons. Amherst now has a 4-2 record.
