Going into today's game, the Jeffs haven't beaten Colby since 1987, nor have they started a season with a 4-0 record under Head Coach Jack Siedlecki. After 60 minutes of play and 34 points, the Jeffs now have both to their credit.
The defense laid on the pressure against the White Mules, registering ten pass break ups and two sacks on the day. Seth Zimmerman '98 led the defense with his 11 tackles (six solo) and three pass break ups. He also registered one tackle for a loss of one yard, as well as a six-yard QB sack.
Rich Willard '98 had another fabulous day. Before exiting the game at the 53-minute mark, he threw a 62-yard touchdown pass to Colin Barnacle '98 to bring the score to its final 34-0. With 238-yards in the air and three touchdowns, Willard now has 845 yards for the season. In just four games, the second-year starter has already surpassed last year's season total of 812 yards.
Amherst scored on their second drive of the game on a 16-yard pass to Chris Miller '97. All day Willard found his receivers wide open as the o-line suppressed the Colby defense. Matt Murray '97 followed up with his third touchdown of the season to make the halftime score 14-0.
The Jeffs maintained this high level of intensity throughout the second half. Bob DiSabato '99 claimed his fourth TD of the year on a one-yard run in the third quarter. Just seconds later, Todd Nichols '99 intercepted a Colby pass for a 39-yard return to goal.
This win holds extra meaning for defensive tackle Alex Bernstein '97. A transfer from Colby his sophomore year, the pre-season All-American has won only one matchup of the two schools, that in his freshman year as a White Mule. After his last chance as a blocker against his old friends, Bernstein has fulfilled his hopes of taking one of three meetings with his former school.
Amherst travels to Wesleyan next week as the opener for little three competition.
