Amherst 20, Smith 5
-- 12 different Amherst College women's lacrosse players scored
as the visiting Jeffs routed host Smith College, 20-5, in a Division
III non-conference matchup on Tuesday afternoon.
The Jeffs, who cruised to a pair of decisive wins during their spring trip to Panama City, Florida, last week, wasted little time jumping on the board in their northern opener, with senior Co-captain Alie Stechenberg (Longmeadow, MA) slipping a shot past Smith College goalie Meg Cuskley (Chappaqua, NY) just 1:10 into the game. Fellow senior Katherine Poulin (St. David's, PA) extended the Jeffs' lead just 1:13 later with her second goal of the season, before the Pioneers retaliated to cut the Amherst lead to one. But from there, the Jeffs broke the game open with an 11-1 run, rattling off seven consecutive goals to open up a 9-1 lead over the hosts. Senior Co-captain Rachel Bernstein (Maplewood, NJ) got the run started with her second tally of the year, assisting on an Anne Close (Limekiln, PA)goal on the other side of Poulin's third goal of the season, giving the visitors a 5-1 lead.
From there, the Jeffs' junior scoring duo of Kristin Osborn (Morristown, NJ) and Sarah Scheessele (Pittsburgh, PA) took over. Osborn, the Jeffs' leading scorer one year ago, tallied her team-best 13th, 14th and 15th goals in a 1:53 stretch, and Scheessele added her fifth, before Smith finally got on the scoreboard again at the 6:21 mark.
Bernstein and rookie Mary Kate Allen (Springfield, MA) each scored before the half, as the Jeffs took an 11-2 lead to the break.
First-year Erin Beaumont (Summit, NJ) waited all of 11 seconds after halftime to boost the Amherst lead to 12-2, before sophomore Meg Martin (Longmeadow, MA) added her second to give the Jeffs an 11-goal cushion. The Pioneers began to rally, led by junior Amanda Edelhart (San Francisco, CA), and the hosts rattled off three straight goals to close to within eight, but the Jeffs came charging right back.
Scheessele and newcomer Laura Schifter (Washington, DC) took turns scoring the Jeffs' next four goals, as the visitors sealed their third win of the season with a 7-0 run to end the game. Martin added her second of the game, and sophomore Carrie Foster (Warsaw, OH) and first-year Molly O'Connor (Baltimore, MD) each broke into the scoring column before the final whistle, giving the Jeffs 12 different goal-scorers, a new single-game school record.
The win for the Jeffs, ranked third in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) national poll, improves them to 3-0 for the season, with a full week off before next Tuesday's home opener against local rival Springfield College. Start time for next Tuesday's game is 4:30 p.m., on Amherst's Pratt Field.
