Amherst 21, Wheaton 2

AMHERST, Mass. -- Three different
Amherst College men's lacrosse players tallied four goals, as
the Jeffs opened their home season in convincing fashion with
a 21-2 pounding of visiting Wheaton College in Division III non-conference
action on Saturday.
Senior midfielder Jason Sowers (Ridgewood,
NJ) got the scoring started just 1:09 into the first quarter,
taking a feed from Tri-captain Sam Altman (Owings Mills, MD)
and rifling a shot past Lion goalie Chris Kelly (Waltham,
MA) to begin the onslaught. Altman scored twice and assisted
on two more goals before the first period was even over, as the
Jeffs opened up a 7-0 lead after one, outshooting Wheaton 19-5
in the first 15 minutes.
The second quarter started in much the
same fashion, with junior Eric Edelson (Bethesda, MD) netting
his second goal of the game at the 10:32 mark to put the Jeffs
up 8-0. Wheaton finally got on the board five minutes later courtesy
of a Zach Hurd (Bath, ME) tally, but from there, the hosts
rattled off nine straight goals, opening up a 19-1 margin before
Lion rookie Tyler Hallam (S. Burlington, VT) scored 15
seconds into the fourth quarter.
For the game, the Jeffs outshot the Lions
62-24, with Altman, Edelson and Sowers all netting four goals
each. Altman added five assists for the second time in two games,
setting a new career-high with nine points. Sophomore Ed Clune
(Wilton, CT) and rookie Chris Condlin (Baltimore, MD) each
scored a pair of goals, and junior goalie Corey Simonson (Brookline,
MA) made seven saves before giving way to sophomore Win
Smith (Greenwich, CT) midway through the third quarter.
For Wheaton, Kelly posted 20 saves for
the game, while Hallam and junior Andrew Miller (Boston, MA)
assisted on the two Lions goals.
The Jeffs (2-0) have a week off until
next Saturday's non-conference date with Saint Lawrence University,
a game to be played at New Canaan HS, while the Lions (1-2) head
home for their home opener against Roger Williams University on
Tuesday.
