Jeffs Dominate Norwich in Doubleheader Sweep
Senior trio turns in big day at the plate, Peloquin '02 brilliant again on the mound

AMHERST, Mass. -- Behind dominant pitching from sophomore Lauren Peloquin (Berkley, MA) and solid offensive production from the senior trio of Liza Feldman (Lincoln, MA), Melissa Roja (Los Altos, CA) and Darcy Sweeney (Keene, NH) the Amherst College softball team opened its northern schedule with a convincing 4-0, 9-1 doubleheader sweep of visiting Norwich University on Saturday.
Peloquin, an NFCA third-team All-American as a rookie, was in control from the opening pitch of the first game, allowing singles from Cadet sophomore Christina Kenny (Monroe, NY) in the third and sixth innings and not allowing another baserunner. The sophomore struck out five and walked none, earning her second complete-game shutout of the season and the fifteenth of her career.
Offensively, the Jeffs were paced by Feldman and Roja, with Feldman opening the scoring with a long two-run double in the bottom of the third. Roja added a pair of RBI singles in the fourth and the sixth, as the Jeffs cruised to the 4-0 win.
In game two, rookie Emily Melia (Hingham, MA) took over where Peloquin left off, yielding only one run on four hits in four innings of work before being relieved. The Cadets took a 1-0 lead in the second on an RBI single from catcher Jennifer Magnum (Schenectady, NY), but that would be all the offense that Norwich could muster. The Jeffs, behind Feldman and Sweeney, put two runs on the board in the third, and added runs in the fourth and the fifth before exploding for five runs in the sixth, taking the game via the eight-run rule.
For the game, Sweeney finished 4-4 with two triples, two runs scored and two RBI, while Feldman, who had the big hit in game one, finished 3-4 in the nightcap, with an RBI and a run scored.
Peloquin, who was perfect in two innings of relief, notched her first career save despite the 8-run decision, as the Jeffs took advantage of eight Norwich errors in game two to capture their 10th win of the season.
