About

The Amherst College Sailing Team is a student run organization at Amherst College. We are a club sport, which means that we are funded by the Student Finance Committe rather than the Athletic Department. We compete against many of the best teams in the country, such as Dartmouth, Tufts, Harvard, Boston College, and Boston University. The team has officially been in existence since 1946, though the first regatta ever sailed was a match race with Williams, making Amherst one of the fifteen oldest sailing teams in the country. If you are an alum of Amherst Sailing, go to our Alumni Page to see what's going on there, or go to the home page for updates.

We practice on Lake Arcadia, 8 miles from campus near the town of Belchertown, MA. We have a fleet of 6 collegiate 420s, 4 FJs, and 1 Laser, and have been regularly hosting regattas for the past four years. In Fall 2002, we hosted one invite and aWestern Series event, and in the Spring of 2003 we hosted two more, including the Western Massachusetts Championship. See the rest of our schedule here.

We were featured in the April 2000 issue of Sailing World Magazine. Read about it here.

There are currently 30 students on the team, most of whom compete. We hold practices five days a week and sail in regattas most weekends. In the past we have sailed in intersectionals such as the Captain Hurst Bowl, Hatch Brown Trophy, the Cary-Price Trophy in Michigan, and the Timme Angstens in Chicago. Our team has both experienced sailors that raced with their high school team and novices that had never sailed before coming toAmherst. If you would like to learn to sail and race, we will teach you. Email us and tell us more about your sailing experience.
