# Problem Set Rules for Math 345 Fall 2017

## General Rules

1. All problem sets are due IN CLASS, AT THE START OF CLASS

2. The homework grade for a late problem set will be marked down 5 percent for each of:

A. being more than a few minutes late
B. not being in by 10:30am
C. not being in by 11am
D. not being in by 1pm
E. not being in by 4pm, and
F. not being in by 10am the following school day.

Note that (D-F) apply both to the due date and each successive school day. (Thursdays are school days even though our class doesn't meet that day.) Thus, a set due Wedneday but handed in at 4:01pm that day is marked down 25%. The same set handed in Friday at 4:01pm is marked down 55%; if handed in Monday after 10am but before 1pm, it would be marked down 60%. And so on.

Obviously, exceptions to the above penalties can be made in cases of incapacitating (and documented) illness, family emergency (confirmed by a dean), religious conflict (but you must notify me at least 5 days in advance), or other comparably significant conflicts.

Please note: you are of course welcome to hand in any problem set as early as you like.

3. Besides serious conflicts as above, you may also take up to two extensions all semester. Each extension can be until the start of the next class meeting at the latest. To receive one of your two extensions, you must request it (by email, phone, or in person) no later than 5pm the day before the problem set is due, and you must attend class on time on both the original due date and the new due date. You also must have been attending class and handing in homework on time in the recent past.

4. Any student who hands in fewer than 50 homework problems over the course of the semester on time (i.e., by the start of class on the due date, or by the start of the next class for an extended problem set) automatically FAILS THE COURSE, regardless of exam grades.

## Formatting and Collaboration Rules

1. Your name must be written on all sheets handed in.

2. Problem solutions must be written out in the order they were assigned.

3. Multiple pages must be stapled or clipped together. No dog ears.

4. Leave margins on all four sides of the paper, and never write in the corner where the staple is going to go.

5. You may collaborate on homework. However:

A. You must write on your problem set the names of all people you collaborated with. Make sure your name stands out as the author of your homework.

B. Each collaborator must hand in his or her own problem set. You cannot hand in a single set as the work of several people.

C. When collaborating, every student must work on every problem. You may not divide the problems up among yourselves.

D. Collaboration means discussing the problems together. However, the actual writing must be done individually; you must submit your answers in your own words. Copying is NOT allowed, and it will be considered academic dishonesty.
