Sports update, football vs. Hamilton, 10/9/99

Saturday, October 9, 1999

Hartford, CT - Senior quarterback Gregg Wysocki (New Britain, CT) connected
on two second half touchdown passes to freshman tight end Lewis Usher
(Newport, RI), as the Trinity College Bantams posted a 31-17 comeback
victory over the visiting Hamilton College Continentals in New England Small
College Athletic Conference football action this afternoon.
Trinity, who improves their season record to 2-1, scored 21 points
in the final 5:11 to rally back from a 17-10 Continental lead. Hamilton
drops to 0-3.
Wysocki completed a 28-yard touchdown pass to Usher on third and
two with 5:11 remaining in the game, and found Usher streaking down the left
sideline for a 56-yard score with 2:39 left in the game. Usher, a freshman
reserve, made amends for a lost fumble on a six-yard during an earlier
fourth quarter drive into Hamilton territory.
Senior linebacker Jeff Iudice (Melrose, MA) intercepted a pass from
Hamilton senior captain quarterback Robbie Peters 18 seconds later, and
returned it 27 yards for the third Bantam touchdown in three minutes to give
Trinity a 31-17 lead.
Hamilton got on the board first on a 20-yard touchdown pass from
Peters to sophomore running back Chris McCarthy with 5:27 remaining in the
first quarter. Trinity responded with a scoring drive of their own,
resulting in a 21-yard field goal by freshman kicker Skip Sullivan (Milton,
MA) in the final seconds of the first quarter. In the second period,
Hamilton kicker Greg Bemis booted a 38-yard field goal and the Continentals
held a 10-7 lead at the half.
Trinity tied the score in the third quarter, when Wysocki completed
his first of three touchdown passes, to senior wide receiver Sean Furey
(Winchester, MA) with 10:16 remaining.
The Bantams were stymied on two consecutive chances to take the lead
in the second half. Sullivan missed a 38-yard field goal with 4:55 left in
the third period, and had a 26-yard attempt blocked early in the fourth.
Trinity had marched to the Hamilton six-yard line, but were pushed back on
two tackles for losses and a penalty on the drive.
Hamilton took a 17-10 lead early in the fourth quarter on a 66-yard
pass from Peters to sophomore wide receiver Charles Martin, and kept the
lead for 7:33 until Wysocki and Usher began their heroics.
Trinity finished with 495 yards in total offense with 340 coming in
the second half. Wysocki completed 22 of 29 passes for 295 yards, no
interceptions and three touchdowns, after throwing for just 73 yards in the
first half. Peters also had a productive day, completing 23 of 40 passes
for 247 yards and two scores but was picked off twice.
Usher caught seven passed for 137 yards for the day, while Martin
and fellow sophomore receiver Jay Morrel combined for 12 catches for 163
yards. Freshman running back Brian Fabrizio (Norwell, MA) made his first
career start and rushed for a career-high 139 yards on 26 carries.
Defensively, Iudice and senior co-captain Sean Joyce (Quincy, MA)
totaled nine tackles apiece, while sophomore safety Steve Cella (Peabody,
MA) made seven tackles and picked off his fourth pass in three games.
Junior defensive end Ron Thomas paced the Continentals with 10 tackles,
three for losses, and one sack.
