Waterville, ME - Sophomore safety Steve Cella (Peabody, MA) returned one of
his two interceptions 24 yards for a touchdown to lead the visiting Trinity
College Bantams to a 35-3 win over the Colby College White Mules in the New
England Small College Athletic Conference football season opener for both
teams. The Bantam win is the first under first-year Head Coach Bill Decker.
Trinity broke a scoreless tie with 7:47 left in the second quarter,
when junior Trevor Jackson (San Francisco, CA) blocked a punt by Colby
senior tri-captain Darren Ireland and junior Charles Botts (Boston, MA)
picked up the ball and returned it 19 yards for a Bantam touchdown.
In the second half, Trinity outscored the Mules, 28-3, including one
passing and one rushing touchdown for senior quarterback Gregg Wysocki (New
Britain, CT). Wysocki completed a 54-yard pass to senior wide receiver Mike
Healey with 13:06 left in the third quarter, and after Cella's first
interception, scampered 14 yards for another score to give Trinity a 21-3
lead with 14:54 to play in the game.
Later in the fourth quarter, Cella intercepted Colby freshman
quarterback Pat Conley and returned it 24 yards for a touchdown, and Bantam
sophomore running back Julian Gratry (Chagrin Falls, OH) added a fifth score
to make the final tally, 35-3.
Trinity took advantage of four White Mule turnovers, and received
fine special teams play in the victory. Jackson made six tackles, mostly on
special teams, in addition to his blocked punt, while senior kicker Andy
Reimer (Scarsdale, NY) was five for five on extra-points. Defensively,
senior linebacker Brian LaHaie (Silver Spring, MD) recorded nine tackles,
including three for losses, and senior linebacker Jeff Iudice (Melrose, MA)
made 10 tackles.
