AMHERST ROLLS PAST TRINITY FOOTBALL

Hartford, Conn.- The Amherst College Lord Jeffs jumped out to a 24-0 lead
and withstood a late rally by Trinity College, defeating the Bantams by a
score of 32-18 this afternoon in New England Small College Athletic
Conference football action this afternoon.
Amherst got on the board early on an 80-yard pass from sophomore
quarterback Peter Honig to freshman receiver Derrell Wright with 7:38 to go
in the first quarter. Wright caught six passes for an Amherst record 224
yards in the game. After a 30-yard field goal by sophomore Liam Fleming put
the Jeffs up, 10-0, Honig connected with sophomore Matt Hall on an
eight-yard scoring strike. The teams traded interceptions (two by Trinity)
on three consecutive plays in the closing minutes before intermission.
Senior Patrick Wenger and junior Brendan McDaviit had picks for the Bantams,
while Amherst sophomore Brian Daoust intercepted his second pass of the day
during the sequence.
Amherst held a 17-0 lead at halftime, and added to it with another
touchdown pass from Honig to Hall, this one for 12 yards with 9:00 minutes
left in the third period. The Bantams finally answered, however, as junior
quarterback came off the bench to hit senior tri-captain J.R. Faget with a
40-yard touchdown pass 17 seconds later.
In the fourth quarter, Trinity scored two more touchdowns, on
nine-yard runs by senior tri-captain Marc Maccarini and senior Sherman
Francis, but having failed on all three extra point attempts and an early
30-yard field goal, Trinity still trailed, 24-18. Amherst senior running
back Bob DiSabato put the game out of reach with 2:02 to play breaking free
for a 50-yard touchdown run, making the final score 32-18.
Trinity had 19 first downs to Amherst's 13, but were once again
victimized by big plays and turnovers. Francis paced the Bantam running
game with 78 yards on 13 carries, while Faget had five catches for 90 yards.
Junior tight end Sean Furey added five catches for 60 yards. Honig threw
for 287 yards, completing 11 of 24 attempts for Amherst. Defensively,
junior linebacker Jeff Iudice had 14 tackles, a forced fumble, and one sack,
and Sophomore end Mike Mobley notched three sacks for Trinity. Amherst
received 11 tackles and a sack from freshman linebacker Dan Lalli and five
tackles and two sacks from junior lineman Greg O'Neill.
