Hartford, Conn.- The Middlebury offense erupted for 562 yards, the second
highest total in team history, as the Panthers defeated the Trinity College
Bantams, 46-14, this afternoon in New England Small College Athletic
Conference football action this afternoon. The game was broadcast on the
New England Sports Network (NESN) as the ECAC Division III New England Game
of the Week. Trinity, which gave up its third highest point total in the
Don Miller era, drops to 2-4 with their third straight loss. Middlebury
improves to 2-4 after an 0-4 start.
Middlebury scored on the second play from scrimmage on a 58-yard
pass from senior quarterback Brian Coates to sophomore Bryan Sanchez. After
the extra point was blocked, Trinity freshman Steve Cella fumbled the
ensuing kickoff and the Panthers recovered at the Bantam 47 yard line.
Coates connected with senior receiver A.J. Husband on a 47-yard touchdown
pass on first down to give Middlebury a 12-0 lead. Coates converted on the
two-point conversion with a three-yard pass to senior fullback Adam Pascal,
giving Middlebury a 14-point lead just 1:23 into the game.
After a 31-yard field goal by Panther senior kicker Scott Dudley,
Trinity started to show some life. Senior cornerback Patrick Wenger blocked
a Middlebury punt and recovered it in the end zone to make the score 17-7
with 4:03 to go in the first half. Dudley missed a field goal on
Middlebury's next drive and Bantam junior quarterback Liam McNeilly hit
senior tri-captain receiver J.R. Faget with a 76-yard touchdown pass to cut
the lead to 17-14 going into the second quarter.
That would be all the points Trinity could score for the game, but
the Panthers kept at it with two more Coates TD passes; 65 yards to
sophomore tight end Zac Campbell and 50 yards to Sanchez again. Coates
finished with 10 completions in 21 attempts for a career-high 281 yards,
while Sanchez tied his career-high, set last week against Bates, with 180
yards on the ground in just 14 carries. Sanchez also tallied 114 yards
receiving on three catches (another career high) for a sum of 294 total
yards. Dudley kicked his second field goal of the half in the second
quarter ax well, making the score, 33-14, at the break.
Middlebury continued to dominate in the second half, scoring a pair
of rushing touchdowns. Sanchez scored for the third time on an 86-yard
scamper and senior back Jeff Semple added a 31-yard run, the shortest
scoring play of the game, to finish the scoring at 46-14.
Faget finished with seven catches for 189 yards and one touchdown
for Trinity, while junior Gregg Wysocki completed six of eight passes for 87
yards in relief of McNeilly. Defensively, junior linebacker Brian LaHaie
paced the Bantams with nine tackles, while sophomore backer Andy Steele had
11 tackles, a sack and an interception for the Panthers.
