UNDEFEATED TUFTS FOOTBALL 
TEAM SHOCKS TRINITY 


Hartford, Conn.-  The Tufts University Jumbos football team used a 21-point
third quarter to break a 3-3 halftime tie and defeat the Trinity College
Bantams this afternoon by a score of 24-3.  The victory was the first for
the Jumbos over the Bantams since 1986, when Tufts downed Trinity, 29-16 in
Hartford. Tufts improves to a perfect 4-0, while Trinity drops to an even
2-2.
        The Jumbos opened up the scoring with a 35-yard field goal by senior
kicker Nate Herpich with 3:33 left in the first quarter. Trinity answered
with a 29-yard field goal by junior John Jankowski, making his varsity debut
because of a pre-game injury to junior starter Andy Reimer with three
seconds remaining in the first half. 
        The score would remain 3-3 until Tufts junior running back John
Routhier broke free for a 52-yard touchdown run 4:32 into the third period.
One minute later, Jumbo senior linebacker John Ferrari knocked the ball
loose from Trinity junior running back Mike Ladd, and Jumbo sophomore
defensive tackle picked up the ball and rumbled to the Trinity nine yard
line. Tufts senior quarterback Dan Morse connected with sophomore wide
receiver Brett Cicchillo on an 18-yard touchdown pass to make the score 17-3
in favor of the Jumbos. Morse added a three-yard touchdown run in the last
11 seconds of the third period.
        Trinity outagined the Jumbos by a margin of 302-228, but were
victimized by 71 yards in penalties, two lost fumbles and an interception.
Junior quarterback Liam McNeilly completed 10 passes for 158 yards for the
Bantams and senior J.R. Faget had seven receptions for 108 yards. Routhier
paced the Tufts offense with 94 rushing yards on 15 carries. Defensively,
Trinity junior linebacker totaled 11 tackles, while junior defensive end
David Achterof had a pair of sacks. Tufts had six different players record
sacks, and senior cornerback Mike Andrews paced the Jumbos with 14 tackles.
