TRINITY FOOTBALL OPENS SEASON
WITH WIN OVER COLBY

Hartford, Conn.- The Trinity College football team opened up the 1998
regular season with a 21-7 victory over visiting Colby College this
afternoon. Senior safety Sean Cooney returned an interception 73 yards for
a touchdown halfway through the third quarter, giving the Bantams a 21-7
lead that would not change. Trinity has a 1-0 record entering a showdown
with Williams next weekend on the road. Colby is 0-1.
     The Bantams kicked off but got the ball when kicker Andy Reimer
recovered a fumble at the Colby 36-yardline by White Mule returner Dan
Noyes on the opening return. Trinity quickly got on the board when junior
quarterback Liam McNeilly connected with senior Marc Maccarini on a 22-yard
touchdown pass five minutes into the first quarter. Colby quickly tied the
score at 7-7 on a 26-yard touchdown throw from junior quarterback Matt
Smith to sophomore wide-out Andrew Tripp. With about four minutes
remaining in the half, Trinity took the lead on an 18-yard scamper by
junior Mike Ladd, making the score 14-7 at the half.
     Trinity dominated the line of scrimmage with 173 yards rushing
versus just 41 for the White Mules. Maccarini paced Trinity with 82 yards
on 18 carries and caught a pair of passes for 58 yards, while Ladd added 51
yards in 10 tries. McNeilly passed for 83 yards and one touchdown, but was
sacked four times.
     The Trinity defense held Colby to just 191 total yards, led by
linebackers Jeff Iudice and Dale Phelps who posted two sacks each.Senior
linebackers Aaron Whitmore and James Scribner led Colby with 10 tackles
apiece.
