Massachusetts is bordered on the north by New Hampshire and Vermont; on the west by New York; and on the south by Connecticut and Rhode Island.  Its state capital and largest city is Boston.

Its counties are Berkshire, Franklin, Hampshire, Hampden, Worcester, Middlesex, Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk, Bristol, Plymouth, Barnstable, Dukes, and Nantucket.

In the Biographical Record, the name of the state is generally omitted in place references when the state is Massachusetts (e.g., "Albany, N. Y." versus "Boston.")  Consequently, there is some ambiguity for places:   "Washington" could mean Washington, Massachusetts or Washington State.  "Peru" could mean Peru, Massachusetts, or Peru the country.  There is a Harvard, Massachusetts, a Princeton, Massachusetts, a Dartmouth, Massachusetts, a Cambridge, Massachusetts, and an Oxford, Massachusetts, just as there are academic institutions called Harvard, Princeton, Dartmouth, Cambridge, and Oxford.  So there are judgement calls to be made.

If the book inadvertantly (or intentionally) omitted the state, I generally assume that the place is in Massachusetts.  Unfortunately, I can't guarantee that that is always so.
