The Amherst College Gender Project
was founded in Fall 2005 as a coalition of students and
staff interested in making Amherst College a safer space
for people of all genders. Through programming and campus
outreach, they hope to spread awareness of genders both
within and outside of the male-female binary (including
male, female, transgendered, gender non-conforming, intersex,
etc.). Their purpose is also to educate the campus about
these issues as a means of recognizing and deconstructing
normative gender roles, along with combating gender stereotypes
and gender oppression. Aside from programming, the Amherst
College Gender Project continually aims to make Amherst
College a safe space by creating and revising institutional
policies, so that they might ensure the inclusion and
acceptance of people of any gender.
Currently, the Gender Project includes representatives
from the Diversity Coalition, Feminist Alliance, Health
Education, Residential Life, Juarez Activism Group,
Men's Project, Peer Advocates, Pride Alliance, Student
Health Educators, and Students for Corporate and Social
Responsibility.
They are currently trying to make Amherst's non-discrimination
and anti-harassment policies trans-inclusive. They are
also working on increasing the number of gender-neutral
bathrooms on campus.
