New Music Ensemble

New Music

The Amherst College NEW MUSIC ENSEMBLE (“NME”) devotes itself to the presentation of masterworks from the 20th and 21st centuries, reflecting the College music department’s reputation in the field of composition as well as the tremendous depth of interest in new music among students in the department. Every year, the NME surveys an extraordinarily rich, diverse and challenging repertoire encompassing an enormous variety of musical idioms and media. Works presented on NME concerts are not limited to any particular style or genre; rather, the NME aims at presenting an eclectic mix and wide range of music.

The NME is advised and coached by the Director of Instrumental Music as well as Professors Lewis Spratlan, Eric Sawyer, David Schneider and others, who sometimes also perform in, or conduct, NME ensembles. Music department students are also involved in planning, rehearsing and presenting new music concerts of their own. Every year there are also numerous performances of honors theses by senior composition students.
