Chamber Music: Curricular & Extracurricular Chamber music is an integral and central component of the classical instrumental music program at Amherst College. In consultation with the Director of Instrumental Music small groups of virtually any combination may be coached by faculty, adjunct instructors and other professionals. Although students may participate in chamber music projects without enrolling for credit, in a solely extracurricular capacity, the core component of the chamber music program at Amherst is the half-course Music 9 (fall) and Music 10 (spring). Students enroll in Music 9/10 only by permission of the Director of Instrumental Music and/or Professor Jenny Kallick. Participants will prepare works for performance during an end-of-the-semester recital and be coached by faculty, adjunct instructors, and be required to participate in and attend master classes by visiting guest artists. As a general rule, students enrolled in chamber music are also required to perform in orchestra. For the 2005/2006 academic year, master classes will be presented by pianist Stephen Hough, violinist Leila Josefowicz, the Jupiter String Quartet, the Brentano String Quartet, and the renowned pianist, conductor and pedagogue Leon Fleisher. If you are interested in participating in the Chamber Music Program at Amherst, all you need do is TAKE THE INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC AUDITION at the beginning of the academic year and note your interest in chamber music on your audition form. During your audition you may discuss your interests, whether curricular or extracurricular, with the Instrumental Music Director. RETURNING STUDENTS INTERESTED IN ENROLLING IN MUSIC 9/10 FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2005-2006 PLEASE CONSULT WITH MARK SWANSON OR JENNY KALLICK.
