How do I audition for the Amherst College Symphony Orchestra?
Just register for a ten-minute audition time on the sign-up sheet in the lobby of the music department. Any Five College--Amherst, Smith, Mount Holyoke, Hampshire, University of Massachusetts--student is eligible to audition. The audition will be a chance for the music director to listen to your playing, get to know you personally, and answer your questions about the Amherst instrumental program.

At your audition, please be ready to:

  • play a prepared work or works of your choice which demonstrate contrasting styles (fast/technical & slow/lyrical)
  • sight read excerpts from upcoming repertoire
  • play selected major, minor and chromatic scales
What kind of time commitment does the Orchestra entail?
We rehearse twice a week (Tuesdays 7:15-9:30, and Thursdays 7:15-9:30). However, the workload tends to increase as we near a concert weekend. Of course, there is individual practice time, as well.
.

Is the ACSO competitive?

Because our orchestra performs very challenging conservatory-level works, players must demonstrate a certain degree of competence and the capacity to handle the repertoire. Auditionees not immediately accepted into the orchestra are encouraged to discuss further options with the music director. These can include private lessons, smaller ensembles and chamber music.
Are there auditions for seating?
Wherever possible we try to rotate sufficiently qualified members. Factors to be considered in assigning principal seats include, among others, previous leadership experience, expressed interest, seniority, overall ability and achievement, and appropriateness for the particular repertoire. However, seating auditions are currently under serious consideration for future performances.
