Within host competition -- Using genetic markers, we are studying the importance of multiple infections in the Microbotryum-Silene relationship. We are sampling natural populations and carrying out field and greenhouse experiments to determine the frequency of multiple infections, and to study competition between fungal strains within individual host plants. Within-host competition is important for the evolution of virulence, population structure, and understanding the concept of individualism in microbial parasites.
