Marsh Coffeehouse is an event where people can relax and listen to fellow students perform music, poetry, comedy, or other artistic endeavours. Free food and coffee provided.

To Perform:

  1. Decide that you want to perform. Pat yourself on the back.
  2. Look at the Equipment section below and figure out what you’re going to need.
  3. Figure out how much time you’d like, preferably timing your performance in place of a guess. (Theoretical maximums are 10 min. for an individual performer, 15 for a group, and 20 when a person is part of two separate groups. You may be able to get more (particularly if you request the final slot), or you may get less time than this, depending on the demand. I try to fit in as many people as possible with as much time as they ask for while also trying to create a bit of variety in the performances.)
  4. E-mail Max at mdcalabro@amherst.edu with the info of your name, what you’re doing, your set-up, how much time you’d like, and if you have any preferences as to when you’d like to perform. Booking is on a first-contact, first-served basis, usually with the people who slip into the line-up last being put at the beginning of the show.
  5. You will receive a response confirming that your request has been received (how business-like of us!) and will be notified if you can be fit in. The schedule will go out to everyone by e-mail sometime on the Thursday before the Coffee-House. Those who cannot be fit in will have first priority for the next Coffee-House.
  6. If you have any problems with the schedule, or have to cancel, contact Max or one of the other Coffee-House organizers ASAP!
  7. Keep checking your e-mail in case something changes.
  8. Yell at all your friends to come see you, but tell them to also stay for as much of the show as they can and try not to talk during performances.
  9. Show up: before the show if you need to do a sound-check, or at the beginning of the show so you can see all the other great performers, or at least 5 minutes before you’re scheduled to go on.
  10. When you are announced (Coffee-House tends to run late, so this may not be until a little bit after your scheduled time) come up, set up as quickly as possible, do your bad-a$$ thing (within the amount of time you were allotted), then clear the stage as quickly as possible so that we can keep things moving and try not to run so late.
  11. Stick around for all the other great stuff!
  12. Bask in the admiration of all your classmates for being so talented. Accept a hearty thanks from all of us involved with putting on the Marsh Coffee-House.
  13. Sign up again!

Equipment available
Marsh house has two mics, two mic stands (one straight, one boom), and a PA with monitor. With this set-up we can take care of two vocalists, or one instrument and vocals. The PA can accept input from guitars with on-board pre-amps, and from extra mics, but you should bring your own equipment and cords. It would be appreciated if you would notify us of what your set-up is going to be (especially for bands), and also how many chairs you will need, if any. If you need any other equipment than the two mics, please try to find it on your own, though we may be able to provide some stuff of our own if you ask nicely.

BANDS: it would be appreciated if you show up early (best if before 9:00) to set things up/do a sound-check, especially if you have a drummer. Remember to let us know what your set-up is going to be so we can help move from act to act as quickly as possible.
