Recording Locations and Schedule

ROCKEFELLER HALL— July 25, morning.

We used the DAT recorder with 2 Rode NT3 microphones to collect ambient as well as directed sounds produced at the piano using various mallets and techniques. The microphones were on the hall floor perpendicular to the entrance foyer.  Additionally, the triangle and woodblock were used.  Digital video was recorded during the whole period.  The sounds we produced were clear and focused, yet little reverberation was present due to the large openings to the book stacks.

ROCKEFELLER HALL/MAIN STAIRWELL— July 25, mid-day.

We used the DAT recorder with 2 Rode NT3 microphones to collect ambient as well as directed sounds produced at the piano using various mallets and techniques. The microphones were placed inside the stairwell while the piano was positioned close to the stairwell entrance with the door open.  Additionally, the triangle and woodblock were used.  Digital video was recorded during the whole period.  The sounds produced reverberated well, given the concrete walls and slate floor.

ROCKEFELLER HALL— July 25, afternoon.

We used the DAT recorder with 2 Rode NT3 microphones to collect ambient as well as directed sounds produced at the piano using various mallets and techniques. The microphones were placed on the 4th floor overlooking the center of the hall.  The piano was positioned in the middle of the hall with the large carpet halfway rolled back.  Additionally, the triangle and woodblock were used.  Digital video was recorded during the whole period.  The sounds produced on the floor of the hall were well directed and clearly audible on the 4th floor; yet without reverberating surfaces the only reflected sound was from the ceiling and floor.
