Amherst College Geology

Animated GIF (left) illustrating an isosurface model of the above sample. In the initial portions of the animation, shale portions of the sample (yellow) are opaque, and as the model rotates, the shale is rendered transparent to reveal the isosurface model of the trilobite (blue). Note that appendages generated using this technique closely mirror appendages visible using conventional X-ray views -- yet did not require extensive manual preparation to extract from the matrix.
