Amherst Baseball Defeats Eastern Connecticut State, 5-3

AMHERST, Mass. —The Amherst College Lord Jeffs defeated the Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors, the number one ranked Div. III team in the country, 5-3, in this afternoon’s match-up.

        Amherst was led by senior Co-captain Hugh Quattlebaum (Andover, MA), who had three hits in three trips, hitting two doubles and a single 
        while tallying two RBI and one run. Quattlebaum sealed the victory for the Jeffs with a two-run single in the eighth inning, giving Amherst
        a 5-2 lead. The Jeffs had eight hits in the game and started their offensive drive early as sophomore J.R. Drabick (Lebanon, NH)
        doubled and junior Dave Siegle (Falmouth, ME) doubled him in in the first inning. Siegle had a strong day for Amherst, going two for four 
        with two runs and an RBI.
        Junior Kevin Downes (Pound Ridge, NY) was the winning pitcher for the Jeffs, striking out six while scattering ten hits over
        eight plus innings. Sophomore Dave Krauser (Short Hills, NJ) finished off the ninth for the save.
        Leading the way for Eastern Connecticut was junior shortstop Nick Tempesta (Brockton, MA), along with junior outfielder George 
        Hixon (Stamford, CT). Tempesta was two for five, with a single, double, and two RBI. Hixon was three for four with three singles 
        and a run. Sophomore Inaki Ormaechea (New Britain, CT) also played well for the Warriors, finishing the game with two runs and 
        two singles.
        The Jeffs’ record increases to 13-3 and they will host Suffolk University this Sunday for a doubleheader. The first game begins at noon.
        The Warriors’ record moves to 19-4 and they will return home to host a doubleheader with Keene State this Saturday.
