II. Call to Order at 9:12 pm

III. Approval of the minutes: Minutes approved.

IV.  Officer Reports:

·  Ryan: Hunger cleanup on 4/10/05.

·  Dave: Graham Lake is removed from the Senate after a brief but distinguished career a career distinguished mainly by its brevity.

·  Ian: Fall semester budgets were due. the stragglers who didn’t turn in budgets will be denied funding.

IV.  Announcements

·  Will: Bird Sanctuary Committeeā possible start of an Environmental Studies major at Amherst

·  Ryan Smith: JC met and discussed issues: allowing more of student body to serve on more committees, and reducing the number of Senators. Educate! was just recognized.

·  Raj: The IT director search committee will interview a candidate this Friday.

·  Rob: Space Allocation committee met; if your club wants a new space, pick up a form from Dean Haynes.

V.  New Business

·  None

VI.  Special Orders

BC recs

·  Total recommended was $5962

·  Reasoning for not funding the Pre-business group seminar ($3002.92): 1) The goal of the particular program, Pre-business group is richer than the AAS at this point, 2) The event is catered towards women too…all events should be open to all students, 3) Students will be charged $45

o  Group Presentation:

1.  over 20 professional women speakers will comeā all proceeds go towards first all-woman’s school in Sierra Leone

2.  have gone to a variety of funding sources

3.  provide students with capital for student-run businesses

4.  also incubate non-profit groups

Motion to divide PBG from regular BC budget.

Motion fails.

Matt motions to fund event in full.

Pros

-  Event looks solid; well-organized

-  Funding them for this Conference is indirectly enabling them to build the school in Sierra Leone; it is a great opportunity

-  Professional about funding issues: have done everything as a club to satisfy the Senate

-  Should not punish PBG simply because they generate income w/o the help of AAS

-  Unique opportunity to learn about the organizational aspect of private business

-  Senate has no business dictating what PBG can and cannot do

-  Women deserve their own event; they are underrepresented; there is a smaller alumni network for women

Cons

-  Event is only open to women

-  In funding this, the Senate is effectively allocating money to an event that the Senate has no control over (the school in Sierra Leone)

-  argument was that not receiving money from AAS for this Conference, the school in Sierra Leone would not be built however, building the school does not benefit the Amherst campus

Matt moves to question.

Motion passes.

·  Ian: Reasoning for not funding two Educate! events: 1) Both be charged a fee. Now that we are funding PBG, we might as well fund Educate!

·  Motion to fund Educate!’s request in full based on precedent just set.

·  Pros:

o  Dodgeball tournament will be fun and benefit charity

·  Cons:

o  Different from PBG request because this is giving money away to Educate! for them to raise money to give money away

Motion passes.

·  Spencer: Amends Hamster recommendation to full amount requested

·  Motion to fund Amherst Dance $50 to pay tech guy.

·  Motion passes.

·  Budgetary recommendations pass.

VII.  Adjournment (10:42 p.m.)
