Stein moves to approve the rest of the BC recs.

  Ski Team

o  Ski Team is notorious for spending large sums of money for small numbers of skiers.

o  For example, in the Spring of 2005, $6000 was not used (because fewer people actually attended the event in question).

o  BC has recommended division and national dues for 14 skiers.

o  Problems lie with constitutionality, the limited amount of things Ski Team members can offer to the Amherst community, the small amount of participants, and the large of money

o  30 freshmen are interested in participating in the team

o  Rob amends the motion on the floor to $0.

1.  Not open to everyone in Amherst

2.  Equipment is very expensive and though there is an equipment pool, good equipment is tailored to the individual

3.  If Senate is to fund the Ski Team, they would cut out a big portion of the Amherst population

o  The dues recommended for the BC are what Ski Team needs to function the dues are for team entry fees, and they are fixed.

o  If BC funds this, then it is expected that the Senate will fund the Ski Team with more money later on in the semester.

o  Despite the “financial aid” provided, the dues of $300, lodging and transportation are still very steep for certain students at Amherst

o  Ski Team arguments:

1.  Have already cut down on lodging and food

2.  Does provide the option of financial aid to people who cannot afford the dues

3.  Money per head is actually pretty similar to other club sports

4.  Complaints of Ski Team not being visible on campus Equestrian team and Crew Team are also not visible on campus

5.  Lots of people are supporters of the Ski Team.

o  Ski Team bears the history of unreliability however, this amount for dues is more-than-reasonable

o  Benson calls to question ($0 for Ski Team).

o  Motion passes for dues for Ski Team.

III.  New Business

WAHM concert produced about 60-75 Amherst students, total 125. When BC recommended the amount, they made the recommendation with 75 attendants in mind.

Emily Silbertein: Would like to pass a Senate order asking all clubs to elaborate on how many students were in attendance of the event from Amherst and 5-college on all subsequent check requests.

Benson, Simmons, Borsellino, Rose and Bookman have formed a committee to enhance support of athletics on campus. This committee is in need of volunteers.

Simmons: Thank you Senators, everything has been going very smoothly. Keep up the good work. Do not forget to use me as a resource.

Mira: Urge Senators to not move to question when the debate is fresh and there are people raising their hands to be on the Speaker’s list. Also, please do not abstain unless you have a personal conflict.

Borsellino: Does not like the fact that Senators who have unexcused absences should go up on the AAS-all-students email. Straw poll: most Senators are in favor of leaving this in the email, but with “unexcused absence” in the text

Richa: Clubs are either not applying for reimbursement, or are not performing their desired programming.

IV.  Adjournment (11:09 p.m.)
