V. New Business
· Next Saturday will be Rosh Hashanah; some Senators will be attending a service that ends at 9:00 pm. Meeting will begin at 9:30 pm.
· For President Marx to bring the Socially Responsible Investing issue to Trustees, he needs to see massive student support. An all-college meeting should be endorsed for this issue.
o Student support should be guaranteed before the Senate would endorse such a meeting.
o President Marx would like Students to come up with a case for him to present to the Trustees.
o The all-school meeting would be an intellectual forum for students to actively engage in the issue. President Marx wants to see that there is broad-based student support and that students have a good understanding of this issue.
o President Marx requests this forum to address solely Sudan.
o Avi motions to call an all-student meeting.
§ Meeting will be more effective than an AAS email prodding students to vote.
§ However, it is not worth it to have this meeting if not enough students will show up Senate needs to thoroughly support this.
§ Students do not know what this meeting is about more effort should be put forth into garnering student awareness.
o Senate charges Mike with writing a survey to be sent out to all students.
o Other means of getting student support should be looked into e.g. tabling in Valentine, dorm-storming for personalized letters
o For Marx to make a good case to the Trustees, student support in numbers is essential thus, an educational campaign about the reason for divesting Amherst’s money is necessary
o Avi withdraws his motion. Josh objects.
o Amos and Mike will come up with an idea for an educational campaign. Next week, they will ask for volunteers to help them from the Senate.
o Motion to table Avi’s motion. Avi calls. Motion passes.
· Committee Elections
o Information Technology Policy Committee (1 seat for 1 year position)
§ Julie Kim, elect
o Advisory Committee to the Committee on Trusteeship
§ Josh Stein, elect
§ Janice Djabatey
o Trustee Advisory Committee for Student Life
§ Patrick Benson
§ Sam Siegal, elect
· Motion to have $150 for food incentives during Speech Night at 6:00 pm.
· Avi moves to question. Julie seconds.
