IV.  Special Orders

Freshmen senators are sworn in.

Steve from IT

·  Would like some help with a survey coming out late October, early November.

·  The survey regards the cellular reception on campus and how students are happy with their service.

·  Hopes to plot graphically on campus where reception is bad and where it is good.

·  May possibly use the leverage of numbers of students in need of better service to persuade vendors to install better service.

Dean Haynes (Advisor of AAS)

·  Has been promoted to Associate Dean of Students. Has something to do with everything that doesn’t deal with academics or athletics.

·  Plans interterm and spring weekend

·  Responsibilities as a Senator

o  Get to know your class.

o  When sitting on committees, please pay attention and know that voting is a privilege.

o  The only reason a senator should abstain during a vote should be if a senator has a direct conflict of interest.

o  Know your constitution.

o  Please have respect for other peoples’ opinions.

Rania Arja

·  Article I: One senator will do one project (can be a max of 4 people). The funds will come out from the Senate fund, which is about $6000 per semester.

·  Project proposals are subject to Senate approval.

BC recommendations

·  21% of the funds were recommended.

·  BC gave the musical $10100, so technically this should go to referendum. The spirit of the amendment for amounts over $10000 to go to referendum is to make sure that the entire student body agrees with the event.

·  Motion to divide musical from rest of the budget.

·  Motion passes.

·  Motion to approve the BC recommendations.

·  Rania calls to question. Avi objects.

·  The BSU issue is basically hearsay right now; no check requests have been submitted and nobody present now can account for what happened.

·  Rania calls to question the BC recommendations.

·  BC recs pass unanimously.

·  Motion to approve the set construction instead of the lighting rental for the interterm musical, which will put the amount to $9,800.

o  Easily, 1000 students attend the musical. Thus, on a per person basis, the cost per student is about $10.

o  Student activities fees should not fund staff.

o  A referendum might be good to engage in student opinion.

o  If this were going to go to referendum, the student body will most likely vote yes, and also senators who hold strong to the constitution will be satisfied.

o  On the other hand, a low turnout for voting will look bad for the Senate.

o  Charmel calls to question.

o  Interterm musical is technically 4 shows, so it doesn’t have to go to referendum anyways.

·  Jason calls to question.
