Juarez Activism Group

Purpose

The mission of the Juarez Activism Group is to spread awareness about and demand justice for the murders of many women in Ciudad Juarez and Chihuahua, Mexico. This year, we have expanded our focus to include similar femicides in Guatemala.

The group was formed two years ago out of a partnership between the Feminist Alliance and the Chicano/a Caucus. We have sent two groups of students on delegations to Juarez to learn more about the murders and to meet with local activist. When we returned, we presented the information we had learned to the student body through panels, movie screenings, lectures in classes, and awareness raising campaigns. We have worked with various community and 5-College groups, along with Amnesty International, many times including organizing a die-in protest with 200 participants last year.

The eventual hope for any activist group working on this situation is, of course, that the murders will stop and the cases will be solved. Our more short term goals are, as previously stated, to raise awareness and assist the mothers of the victims in Mexico and Guatemala however we can.
