Hillel
Jewish student group
Purpose
Hillel provides Jewish social, cultural, religious, and Israel-related programming for the college community. We also attempt to build bridges in the community through interfaith events and community service/activism. Although Jewish in nature, all aspects of Hillel’s programming are open to everyone. Hillel provides the college community with a means to celebrate all Jewish holidays, often through more than just prayer. Each Friday, we hold our weekly Shabbat evening, which features a prayer-service and home-cooked Kosher dinner. Such evenings are frequently themed, adding a cultural, social, or interfaith aspect. We also host concerts and performances by student groups, and have been very active in AIDS awareness and Save Darfur activities at Amherst, in fulfilling the Jewish ideal of “Tikkun olam”—-repairing the world.
