ACEMS

Purpose

ACEMS is a student-run, student-staffed, volunteer organization that operates 24 hrs/day while classes are in session providing Basic Life Support Quick Response (BLS/QRS) to medical emergencies on the Amherst Campus. Using the college dispatch system—which can be reached at any hour by dialing x2111 on campus, two trained medical personnel (always at least one Massachusetts-licensed Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-M) and usually a First Responder (FR)) are dispatched for all medical emergencies. If the call is thought to be of a potentially life-threatening nature or at the request of the patient, the Amherst Fire Department (AFD) Ambulance is dispatched along with the ACEMS responders.

Our Board of Directors and ACEMS personnel work closely with the Amherst Health Service (AHS), University of Massachusetts Health Service (University Health Services or UHS), and Amherst College Public Safety; however, we do NOT provide routine transport to either facility nor are we affiliated with Amherst College Public Safety. We are strictly an emergency medical response service. We do provide transport for patients who are need of immediate medical attention (during the day this will be AHS; when AHS is closed transport will only be provided to UHS). In cases of severe trauma or those that require close medical supervision during transport, ACEMS will call AFD for transport to Cooley Dickson Hospital.
