The New England Small College
Athletic Conference (NESCAC)
The New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC)
was founded in 1971 by 11 New England schools to preserve the delicate balance
between athletics and academics. Amherst College, Bowdoin College, Wesleyan University
and Williams College had been conference partners since 1955, and Bates College,
Colby College, Hamilton College, Middlebury College, Trinity College, Tufts University
and Union College joined the original four in chartering the league. Union left
NESCAC in 1977, but Connecticut College joined in 1982, bringing the number of
institutions back to the original total of 11.
In 1993, the NESCAC lifted its self-imposed
ban on NCAA participation, and the league has since grown into the strongest conference
in Division III. In the final 1998-1999 Sears Director's Cup standings for overall
athletic programs, three of the top four teams in the nation were NESCAC (Williams,
Middlebury & Amherst).
