Amherst Women First, Men Third at Season-Opening Amherst Invitational

AMHERST, MA - It didn’t take long for Amherst College senior All-America Carter Hamill (Richmond, VA) and sophomore All-America Shauneen Garrahan (Fairfax Station, VA) to each add yet another accolade to their already long lists of achievements. Hamill finished first and Garrahan second to lead the Amherst women’s cross country contingent to a team title today at the season-opening Amherst Invitational, their second in as many years at this meet, besting Keene State by over 30 points. Meanwhile, the Amherst men, led by seniors Matt Katz (Tallahassee, FL) and Dave Molina (Cleveland, OH), placed third, 27 points behind team champion Keene State.

On the women’s side, Hamill and Garrahan were followed by first-years Kim Partee (Brentwood, TN) and Heather Wilson (Danvers, MA), who grabbed fourth- and sixth-place finishes. Sophomore Margaret Davis (Richmond, VA) crossed the line just over two seconds behind Wilson to finish seventh, while classmate Ginger Polich (Ironwood, MI) and first-year Laura Mortimer (Jackson, MS) placed 10th and 12th, respectively.

In the men’s race, Katz, Molina, and first-year Tomas Morrissey (Astoria, OR) all placed in the top 10; Katz finished sixth, Molina seventh and Morrissey ninth. Sophomore Cooper Knowlton (Montclair, NJ) (20th), first-year Mike Harbus (New York, NY) (21st), and sophomores John Babbott (Ojai, CA) (23rd) and Richard Wilson (Columbus, OH) (27th) rounded out the top seven for the men.

Both squads return to action next Saturday, Sept. 18, at the UMass-Dartmouth Invitational.
