Lord Jeffs Sweep Hamilton and Union Over Weekend

The Amherst Women’s and Men’s swimming and diving teams were victorious in their returns to action against Hamilton College and Union College following their training trip in Puerto Rico. Both the men’s and women’s teams registered a pair of win this weekend

On Saturday, the Lord Jeffs hosted Hamilton with the Amherst women prevailing by a final score of 167-112, while the Lord Jeff men finished with a 167-116 win. Junior Julie Kim (Montville, NJ) first year Anna Haring (Santa Barbara, CA), and sophomore Sabrina Dorman (Chevy Chase, MD) led the way for the women, who dominated throughout the meet, winning a total of fourteen of the sixteen events. Kim took first place in the 1000 and 100 yard freestyle events in addition to teaming with junior Brittany Sasser (Belmont, MA), senior Margaret Ramsay (Belmont, MA), and sophomore Meaghan Stern (Albuquerque, NM) to win the 800 freestyle relay and set a new pool record. Haring came out on top in both the 200 freestyle and 200 IM while Dorman won both the one and three meter diving events.

In a similarly dominant performance, the men won thirteen of the sixteen events. First year Tad Homchick (Mercer Island, WA), sophomore Christian Witzke (Jacksonville, FL), senior John Ancona (Lake Forest, IL), and junior diver Connor Boyd (Northridge, CA) each won two individual events for the Lord Jeffs. Homchick, who won the 200 freestyle and 200 IM, and Witzke, who won the 1000 and 100 freestyles, also joined junior Andrew Maslan (Mission Hills, KS) and sophomore Joseph Scala (Pequannock, NJ) to win the 800 freestyle relay. Ancona came out on top in both breastroke events and Boyd won both diving events.

Both sides continued their dominance on Sunday against visiting Union College, with the women winning 159-82 and the men coming away with a 180-59 win.

In the women’s meet, the Jeffs won all eleven of the swimming events. Sophomore Meaghan Stern, who won both the 200 and 500 freestyles, led the way, while seven of her teammates also captured individual wins. Junior Brittany Sasser continued her remarkable, undefeated season with a pool record setting and provisional qualifying time for nationals in the 400 IM.

The men finished the weekend with a bang as well, taking nine of the eleven swimming events and sweeping the boards against the visiting Dutchmen. Junior diver Connor Boyd highlighted the meet with brilliant showings in both the one and three meter diving competitions. His efforts earned him provisional qualifying scores for nationals in both events. The men also enjoyed an astounding team effort with seven different team members earning individual wins.

The women’s team improved to 6-0 with the win while the men climbed to 4-2. Both teams return to action Saturday January 27 at 1:00 p.m. against the visiting MIT Engineers.
