AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College squash teams played at NESCAC archrival Williams yesterday in the Little Three Championships before wrapping up their weekends at home hosting Bates College. Both Lord Jeff sides finished second in the Little Three to Williams, before returning to Davenport Courts on Amherst’s campus for the last regular season matches of the year. The Amherst men ultimately avenged their NESCAC Tournament loss to Bates with a 6-3 win, while the women’s team fell to Bates 7-2.

Both teams were handed tough shutout losses by Little Three host Williams College on Saturday, but bounced back with 9-0 wins over archrival Wesleyan in the second matches of the day. The Ephs would move on to take down Wesleyan in the Little Three final, and win the outright titles for 2007.

After the tiring start to the weekend, the Lord Jeffs retuned to Amherst to face the visiting Bobcats on for the class of 2007’s final home match. Looking to send out the group of four seniors for both sides on a high note, the Lord Jeffs hoped to gain some final momentum before heading to the CSA National Tournament.

In his last match of the regular season, Amherst sophomore Drew Blacker (Summit, NJ) drew Bates’ Sean Wilkinson on Vickery Exhibition Court, in what would prove to be a challenging match-up for the young Lord Jeff. Blacker held a 7-4 lead in game one before Wilkinson rattled off five consecutive scores for the 9-7 win. Blacker came back with a vengeance in games two and three with back-to-back wins for a 2-1 lead, before dropping game four 9-3 to force a fifth game. Blacker held just a 4-3 advantage in game five, before pulling away for the 9-4 win.

In the top spot, senior co-captain Auloke Mathur (Mumbai, India) suffered a tough loss to Ricky Weisskopf in three games, 9-0, 9-0, 9-0. The loss drops the senior’s record to 2-3 since taking over the top seed three weeks ago.

In top women’s action, senior co-captain Emily O’Brien (New Canaan, CT) played a back-and-forth five game marathon against Hannah Laverty in the two spot. O’Brien played her heart out, but was unable to come out on top during the final home match of her career, falling 3-2.

In the top women’s match, senior co-captain Caroline Shannon (Hanover, NH) took the lone Amherst women’s win of the day, winning her match 9-5, [5-9], 9-6, 9-4. Shannon adjusted well during her match, and was able to take home a well deserved win in her finale at Davenport Courts.

Both teams will return to action on February 23 when they open up the Howe Cup National Tournament in New Haven, with start times and match-ups to be determind.
