Jeffs Drop Season Opener to Western New England, 16-8
March 14, 2007
AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College men’s lacrosse team dropped its season opener to Western New England College, 16-8, at a slippery Garber Field on the campus of UMASS-Amherst. The Lord Jeffs trailed by only four heading into the final period, but let the Golden Bears open the fourth frame by scoring five goals in the first five-and-a-half minutes.
The first period featured a nine-minute scoring drought after the Bears’ Travis Brown found the back of the net after just 67 seconds of play, as Amherst’s John-Thomas Milone (Manhasset, NY) tied the game at 1-1 10 minutes into the game. Western New England was able to close out the opening frame with a pair of goals, taking a 3-1 lead into the first intermission.
The visitors wasted no time in the second period, finding the back of the net after just 34 seconds of action to take a 4-1 lead before rattling off three more goals by the 5:30 mark, including two that were separated by only eight seconds.
First-year Thomas McDonnell (Manhasset, NY) closed out the scoring in the second period to make it a 7-2 deficit, and opened the scoring in the second half to make it 7-3. Just over one minute later, T.J. Jackson (Worcester, PA) had the Jeffs back in the game with an unassisted goal.
After senior co-captain Adam Cherry netted his second goal of the game to put his team ahead, 8-4, Jon Hayes scored a short-handed goal for his third score of the game. The teams traded goals to close out the third period, as they headed into the final intermission with the Golden Bears leading 10-6.
The fourth period was not pretty for Amherst, who allowed five goals in the first five minutes and 30 seconds to increase the deficit to nine with less than 10 minutes to make a comeback. Jackson finally stopped Western New England’s scoring spree by netting his second goal at the 6:05 mark, and each team put in one more goal the rest of the way, as the Golden Bears remained unbeaten with the 16-8 win.
Western New England junior Brian Cofrin led the attack, scoring four goals (three of which came in the final period) and assisting on two. Senior tri-captain Derek Cherney (Chappaqua, NY) tallied four assists and added a goal for Amherst, while Jackson and McDonnell each picked up a pair of goals. Sophomore Matt Pietroforte (Brooklyn, NY) picked up 22 saves for the Jeffs in a very busy night between the pipes, while the Golden Bears’ Chris Brody stopped 13 shots.
The Lord Jeffs return to action Saturday, Mar. 17 for a match-up with Swarthmore College. Game time is set for 11 a.m. at Yale University.
