Amherst to Host Final Rounds of NESCAC Tournament

February 20, 2007

AMHERST, MA – The third-ranked Amherst College men’s basketball team will host the semifinals and finals of the 2007 NESCAC tournament, marking the third year in a row that the Jeffs have hosted the NESCAC tournament throughout. Amherst is pitted against Colby College in the first semifinal match-up, with the White Mules making their first semifinal appearance since 2001.

Amherst will look to appear in its seventh straight NESCAC final while hoping to capture its third straight NESCAC Championship. The Jeffs have no easy task in the White Mules, who bring two of the most consistent scorers in the conference: senior guard Nick Ferrell and big man Drew Cohen. In the teams’ only meeting of the year, the Jeffs traveled to Waterville, Maine and handed Colby a 69-58 loss, which was highlighted by a 19-point, eight-assist performance from junior point guard Andrew Olson (San Diego, CA).

The game will be aired live on Amherst’s student operated radio station, WAMH (http://wamh.amherst.edu). Williams College and Trinity College radio stations will cover the other semifinal match-up, which pits second-seeded Trinity against third-seeded Williams.

The game can also be watched live online at http://www.d3cast.com/index.php, which will feature both audio and video of all three games over the weekend.

Amherst defeated Bates College last weekend in a hard-fought contest. The Jeffs found themselves down by six heading into the locker room but pulled it together in the second half to come away with the victory. The Lord Jeffs will have a chance to advance to the NESCAC Finals with a win over the White Mules at 2 p.m. The winner of this match-up will play the other semifinal winner on Sunday at noon.

A NUMBER OF TICKETS WILL BE SOLD AT AMHERST'S ALUMNI GYM FROM 11:30a.m. - 3:00 p.m. ON THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 22nd TO WALK-UP CUSTOMERS. NO OTHER TICKETS WILL BE AVAILABLE PRE-SALE, WITH THE REMAINDER SOLD AT THE DOOR ON GAMEDAY, FIRST-COME FIRST-SERVE.
