Linda and Hub Smith 57Johnson Chapel Associates: Linda and Hub Smith '57

A respected Valley couple, Linda (Smith ’60) and Hub are known by many alumni and friends, not only in the Pioneer Valley, but throughout the country. After a successful 27-year career with Life, Sports Illustrated and Time magazines, Hub returned to his alma mater in 1985 to join the college’s alumni and development staff for 10 years. Linda retired a few years later after a career as director of donor relations and special events at Smith, before which she was director of development at Historic Deerfield.

An interesting twist to this Valley story is that Hub’s mother was a 1927 graduate of Mount Holyoke College, and it was she who was influential in Hub’s selection of Amherst as his primary choice, for which he is forever grateful.

Throughout his career, both on and off campus, Hub has made a difference. As a volunteer for his class, Hub has served as treasurer, Reunion co-chair and class agent. After his service and subsequent retirement from Amherst, Hub had an unfortunate spinal-cord injury during surgery, causing him to focus heavily on rehabilitation almost on a daily basis. During the past year and a half, he has become intimately familiar with the college’s wonderful fitness center, and it is a joy to see him there from time to time. Those lucky enough to travel the streets of Amherst might also see Hub at the wheel of his own hand-controlled vehicle.

Thoughts on giving to Amherst: “Amherst and Smith had been significant to us as undergraduates, alums and staff members. We are proud of our associations with each and want them to remain strong. We found ourselves able to fund charitable gift annuities with some highly appreciated stock, thus minimizing our capital gains and increasing our retirement income; a win-win situation for us all.”

The Johnson Chapel Associates society recognizes those alumni and friends who have named Amherst in their will and/or provided for the college through a planned gift.
