Johnson Chapel Associates: Mr. and Mrs. R. William Marberger Jr.
Pictured here with his wife, Jean, during one of his frequent visits to Amherst,
Bill Marberger '41 has fond memories of The Fairest College. He has attended every Reunion but one and regularly travels from his home in Asheville, N. C., to enjoy Homecoming. As class president during the '90s, Bill has served the college and his beloved Class of with distinction.
After graduating from Amherst with a degree in biology, Bill entered the field of business. He changed jobs several times, completing his career as an executive in the turf industry. Says Bill, it was he who helped open the Bermuda golf courses to American industry, a plum assignment only true golfers can appreciate. He attributes his success to the broad liberal arts education he received at Amherst, and says that small classes, personal relationships and outstanding teaching forever matured his mind.
Thoughts on giving to Amherst: “If I had not experienced an Amherst liberal
education, I would never have been able to attain the success I did. Hence, it was
easy for me to decide to help the college financially and at the same time assure
myself of a fairly stable income through a life income plan.”
The Johnson Chapel Associates society recognizes those alumni and friends who have named Amherst in their will and/or provided for the college through a planned gift.
