Placement Test Mandatory for Students NEW to Spanish Language Courses; Take It Online Jan. 17-31
The Spanish Department administers an
online placement exam to help students
enroll in Spanish language courses at
the correct level. Amherst College
students will have access from Jan.
17 to 31. Go to the Spanish Department
website (at the link below), click on "Placement Test" in
menu on the left, log in and follow
directions provided. You will need
a computer with speakers or headphones.
Five College students should contact
Language Coordinator Victoria Maillo at
vmaillo@amherst.edu to schedule the
placement exam. A personal interview
will follow the exam. Please contact Victoria
Maillo to schedule this interview after
you have taken the exam.

German Table Every Monday Starting Jan. 31
The German Table meet every Monday at
11:45 a.m. in Valentine Hall in the
Mezzanine. The first meeting for the
spring semester will be on Monday,
Jan. 31. Come and chat with faculty

Japanese Language Table Begins Jan. 31
Japanese language table will begin meeting
on Monday, Jan. 31, and will meet every
Monday (noon to 1 p.m.), Tuesday (noon to 2 p.m.) and
Friday (noon to 1 p.m.) in Terrace Room A of
Valentine Dining Hall.
Chinese Language Table Begins Jan. 31
The Chinese language table will begin
meeting in Valentine Dining Hall on
Monday, Jan. 31, and will meet every
Monday (in S Conference Room), Tuesday
(in Terrace Room B) and Friday (in S Conference
Room) from noon to 1 p.m.
College Closed Wednesday, Feb. 2
Due to inclement weather, Amherst College
will be closed on Wednesday, Feb. 2.
Students should check with their
professors to see if classes will be
held.
No On-Street Parking in Amherst Wednesday, Feb. 2
Due to inclement weather, the town of
Amherst is not allowing any on-street
parking until further notice. Public
parking lots and the parking garage will
remain open throughout the on-street

Funding Support Available for Some Senior Projects; Apply by Feb. 1
Funding support for some senior
projects is available in the form of
grants from the Alpha Delta Phi Fund
and the David P. Patchel Memorial Fund.
The Alpha Delta Phi Fund is designed to
support senior essay-writing, special
topics and other comparable independent
projects. All seniors in the humanities
and social sciences may apply. Monies
from the David P. Patchel Memorial Fund
can be used for senior projects having
to do with the moving image, whether
essays, theses or production projects.

Russian Table Begins Feb. 2!
Russian Table will begin on Feb. 2. We will meet on the Valentine mezzanine every Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
2011-2012 Resident Counselor Applications Available Now! Deadline Feb. 4
Approximately 60 Resident
Counselors will be selected to serve
for the 2011-2012 academic year.
Current first-year students, sophomores
and juniors in good academic standing
are eligible to apply. You may download
a copy of the application online or
pick up a paper version in Converse
105. Resident Counselors will be
selected based on the evaluations of
their applications, interviews and
letters of recommendation. All
applicants should attend an information
session on Tuesday, Feb. 1, from 7
to 8 p.m. in Stirn Auditorium. The
application deadline is Friday,
Feb. 4, 2011. Each student should sign
up for an interview time when
returning the application. Interviews
are scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 17; Friday,
Feb. 18; and Saturday, Feb. 19.

Amherst College Fellowships Applications Now Available; Apply by Feb. 10
Any senior or recent graduate interested
in Amherst College Fellowships for
graduate study in 2011-2012 may pick up
an application in the Office of
Fellowships (213 Converse Hall), the
Career Center or the Office of Financial
Aid. The application deadline is
Feb. 10. Prior acceptance to
graduate school is not necessary for
application, but you must be in the
process of applying. Fellows are
selected on the basis of merit and
financial need. There is one
application for all the different
fellowships, and descriptions are in the
Amherst College Course Catalog. The
Rufus B. Kellogg University Fellowship
will not be awarded again until 2012.

Hitchcock Fellowship Applications Due Feb. 11
The Department of Physical Education and
Athletics invites applications for the
Hitchcock Fellowship for the 2011-2012
academic year. The Hitchcock Fellowship
is awarded to a graduating senior who
wishes to pursue a career in the field
of athletics. The Hitchcock Fellow will
teach in the elective Physical Education
program and be an assistant coach in at
least two of the intercollegiate
programs. The Hitchcock Fellow may
elect additional assignments in other
areas of inquiry (e.g. strength and
conditioning). Individuals interested
in the position should send a letter of
application and current resume no later
than Feb. 11, 2011, to Michelle Morgan,
Senior Woman Administrator in the
Department of Physical Education and
Athletics.
Editorial Internship Available in Amherst College Office of Public Affairs-- Apply by Feb. 11
Public Affairs is seeking a student to
work 8-10 hours a week this semester as
a paid editorial intern. This is a great
opportunity for someone interested in a
career in journalism, media relations or
magazine publishing to build a portfolio
of clips. The job will include
fact-checking and proofreading for Amherst
magazine and writing for the college's
homepage. The intern will pitch story
ideas, write at least 2-3 articles a
month and post to Facebook and Twitter.
Applicants should write well and quickly
and possess top-notch proofreading and
research skills. A strong attention to
detail is a must. Previous work in
journalism, PR or magazine publishing is
a plus but not a requirement. To apply,

Twelve College Exchange Program Application Deadline Feb. 11
This program facilitates residential
study at Bowdoin, Connecticut,
Dartmouth, Mount Holyoke, Smith,
Trinity, Vassar, Wellesley, Wheaton,
Wesleyan, the Mystic Seaport Program and the
National Theater Institute. Interested
students must meet with Dean Janna
Behrens by Friday, Feb. 11.
Applications are due Monday, Feb.
14. Students must also comply with
the college's internal notification
deadlines: March 15 for the Fall 2011 semester
and 2011-12 academic year or April 15 for
the Spring 2012 semester. Any student who fails to
submit an Intent form by the stipulated
deadlines will not receive credit for
course work completed at another school.

Student Housing Advisory Committee: New Members Needed! Apply by Feb. 14
The Student Housing Advisory Committee
(SHAC) is accepting applications for three
new members to assist with Room Draw
coordination this year, as well as next
year's housing selection process. This
paid two-year position is open only to
members of the Classes of 2012 and 2013.
Please note that you must have directly
participated in at least one Room Draw
in order to be eligible. An e-mail including the application
form will
be sent to all members of the Classes of
2012 and 2013, or you can pick up an application
in the Residential Life Office (Converse
105). The deadline for applications is
Monday, Feb. 14.
Summer Study Abroad Fellowships: Application Deadline Feb. 15
Amherst College has a limited number of
highly competitive fellowships for
summer study abroad programs. Students
must be first-years, sophomores or
juniors. There may be other eligibility requirements,

Family Skating Hours at Orr Rink Dec. 5 to Feb. 20
Family Skating hours at Orr Rink will begin
this Sunday, Dec. 5, with a session from noon to
2 p.m. This session is open to all
members of the college community with an

Sign Up for Music Practice Rooms
Students, faculty and staff who wish to
use the Music Department practice room
facilities during spring semester and who did
not sign up in September may sign up for
practice room keys during the first two
weeks of the semester: Monday, Jan. 24, to Friday,
Jan. 28, and Monday, Jan. 31, to Friday, Feb. 4, from
9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Senior music majors
preparing Honors recitals may also
reserve practice time during these two
weeks. On Sunday, Feb. 6, anyone who
has been issued a key may schedule
reserved practice time for the spring
semester. Those sign-up hours will be
from noon to 5 p.m. and 7 to 10 p.m.
Information concerning access to
practice rooms and fees is posted in the
Arms Music Center. Applications for keys will
be available in the Music Department at the
time of sign-up.
Amherst College Summer Research Fellowships in the Sciences: Apply by Feb. 18
Are you a first- or second-year student who would like to spend this summer on campus pursuing a collaborative research project in the sciences? Then an Amherst College Summer Research Fellowship may be perfect for you! A total of approximately 21 fellowships for students in the Classes of 2013 and 2014 will be awarded. The program will run for 10 weeks starting as soon as Monday, May 30 (start and end dates may vary depending on the summer schedule of the faculty advisor). 2011 Five College Student Film & Video Festival Entry Deadline Feb. 17
The deadline for submitting entries for the 2011 Five College Student Film & Video Festival is Thursday, Feb. 17, by 3 p.m. Submissions may be turned in at specific locations at each of the Five Colleges. Download the entry form, which has much more detail, at the link below. The festival will take place on Friday, Feb. 25, at 7 p.m. in the Main Lecture Hall at Hampshire College. A total of twelve cash prizes will be awarded to the top-ranked
entries for each category, the top winner from each of the Five Colleges and the grand prize winner of the festival.

Sign Up for Red Cross Blood Drive in Campus Center Feb. 17
Amherst College is holding a Red Cross
blood drive at the Keefe Campus Center on
Thursday, Feb. 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Red
Cross has seen 28,000 scheduled blood
donations canceled as a result of the severe
winter weather. The Red Cross is
currently on a national appeal for
donors to help replenish the blood
inventory, which is at the lowest it has
been in more than a decade. Walk-ins
are always welcome, but appointments are
encouraged. For an appointment, please
call 1-800-922-4376 or, up until one day
before the drive, go to
redcrossblood.org. Be sure to eat before
you donate. A positive ID is required.
All presenting donors will receive a
"Boston Bruins Bleed Black & Gold" T-shirt and,
courtesy of Sub & Pizza in Amherst, a
coupon for a slice of cheese pizza and a
can of Coca-Cola.

Harlem Gospel Choir Ticket Reservations Begin Feb. 2
Harlem Gospel Choir ticket reservations
begin on Wednesday, Feb. 2. On Friday, Feb. 25, at 8 p.m., the renowned
Harlem Gospel Choir will perform in
Buckley Recital Hall. This is their fourth
annual concert at the college. The concert is
sponsored by the college's Rev. Dr. Martin
Luther King Jr. Celebration Committee as
a way to celebrate and honor the life
and work of Dr. King. The concert is
free and open to the public, but tickets
