Keefe Health Center Hours During Winter Holiday Break
The Amherst College Keefe Health
Center will close for the Winter
Holiday Break at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday,
Dec. 23, and will reopen for
Interterm at 8:30 a.m. on
Monday, Jan. 3. Amherst College
students remaining in the local area
are eligible to receive medical care
for urgent needs only at UMass
University Health Services at 413-577-5000 when the Keefe
Health Center is closed. Amherst
students with emergencies should
contact the Campus Police at 413-542-2111.
UMass University Health Services is
closed between midnight and 8 a.m.
During these hours, students may
contact the telephone nurse at 413-577-5000 or may utilize the Walk-In Clinic at Cooley Dickinson Hospital
413-582-2000.
Register for 'Applied Policy Analysis' Interterm Course
"Applied Policy Analysis" is a course that explores
policy-making as both a problem-solving and
political process. Over two and a half weeks,
students will gain firsthand experience with
participatory public policy by working with
community-based organizations in Holyoke and
Springfield. The course will be led by Aron
Goldman, director of the Springfield Institute, and
will focus on youth violence prevention, health
disparities and biomass. The course will be open to
Five College students and will run from Jan. 4 to 20. It
will take place at Amherst College with trips to
nearby community organizations.

Interterm Thesis Support at the Writing Center
During Interterm, the Writing Center will
offer a number of services for thesis
writers. In addition to one-on-one
mentoring sessions, in which we offer
feedback on your writing or help you
find more effective writing processes,
we will be holding workshops on
generating writing more easily, adopting
a productive attitude towards your work
and revising your writing. We will also
hold a Thesis Writers' Retreat, which
will provide a structured and motivating
environment in which to produce a
substantial amount of writing. Come to
the Writing Center on Friday, Dec.
17, from 1 to 2 p.m., to learn more about
this new program. And keep your eyes
open for more information about how you
might make use of the Writing Center
over Interterm.

Applications for Hitchcock Fellowship Due Feb. 11
The Department of Physical Education and
Athletics invites applications for the
Hitchcock Fellowship for the 2011-2012
academic year. The Hitchcock Fellowship
is awarded to a graduating senior who
wishes to pursue a career in the field
of athletics. The Hitchcock Fellow will
teach in the elective Physical Education
program and be an Assistant Coach in at
least two of the intercollegiate
programs. The Hitchcock Fellow may
elect additional assignments in other
areas of inquiry (e.g. strength and
conditioning). Any individual interested
in the position should send a letter of
application and current resume no later
than Feb. 11, 2011, to mcmorgan@amherst.edu.
Register for 2011 Bioscience Symposium
The third annual Gerald R. Fink '62
Bioscience Symposium will be held on
Thursday, Jan. 20, and registration
has begun. Registration is a
commitment to attend, and space is
limited. New this year, there will be a
separate Science Writing Workshop with
Claudia Kalb '85, senior writer from
Newsweek. There is a separate
registration for this workshop, with a
limit of 20 seats. For more information,

$10,000 Summer Grant: 100 Projects for Peace Application Deadline Jan. 14
Interested in making the world a more
peaceful place? The Davis UWC
Foundation's 100 Projects for Peace
program provides funding for
undergraduates (including seniors) to
create and implement their own
grassroots projects for building peace
in the 21st-century world. Projects, by
individual students or groups, may be
undertaken anywhere, including the
United States. Application materials
will include a two-page project
description, a one-page budget, a resume
and a personal statement. More

Amherst College Website Focus Group: Volunteer by Jan. 17
First-year and transfer students: Would
you be interested in participating in a
brief, informal focus group to tell us
your opinions about Amherst's website?
Staff from Public Affairs, Admission and
I.T. are interested to know what
impressions of Amherst you gained from
the site during your college search and
what you think of the site's tools and
features you use as students. You will
not need to do anything to prepare for
the session. Snacks will be provided. If

Jan. 17. We are planning to hold the
session during the last week of Interterm.
AAS Hiring Budgetary Clerk-- Apply by Jan. 31
The AAS is looking to hire an additional budgetary
clerk to work with the AAS Treasurer and the
Budgetary Committee in managing and distributing
AAS funds. The budgetary clerk would be
responsible for working in QuickBooks software
and Excel to maintain a record of AAS allocations
and reimbursements. Training will be provided, but
some knowledge of Excel will be preferred. The
clerk will be paid at a competitive hourly rate and
can expect to work an average 3-4 hours a week.

Interterm Writing Workshops Open for Registration
The Writing Center is pleased to
announce that its January workshops are
now open for registration. They include
"Write to Learn," a series of workshops
focused on developing voice in
nonfiction writing; "Personalizing the
Process," which will provide ongoing
one-on-one instruction for academic
writing; and "An Audience of One," which
will offer the same personalized
instruction for creative writing.
Workshops for thesis writers include
"Getting Started/Moving Forward,"
"Retrain your Thesis Brain,"
"Orchestrating the Dialogue: Integrating
Research into your own Writing" and
"Revising from Parts to Whole."
"Nothing in Excess" will address
wordiness in writing. Pre-registration
is required.

Seniors: Nominate High School Teachers for Swift Moore Awards-- Deadline Extended to Jan. 21
In 1997, Amherst College inaugurated the Phebe and Zephaniah
Swift Moore Award to honor some of this
country's outstanding high school
teachers. Graduating seniors are invited
to nominate teachers who made impacts
on their lives. If you remember a
secondary school teacher who stands out
as deserving of the Phebe and Zephaniah
Swift Moore Award, please submit his or
her name at the address below. The
deadline for receipt of nominations has been extended until
Friday, Jan. 21.

for seniors wishing to schedule a
Senior Health Review. This is an
opportunity to review your medical
file and to obtain a necessary medical
examination, laboratory tests,
immunizations and prescriptions.

Proficiency Examination in Economics: Sign Up by Jan. 23
A Proficiency Examination in economics
will be given at 3:30 p.m. on Monday,
Jan. 24, and 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday,
Jan. 26, in 308 Converse Hall. The
exam is a one-hour multiple-choice test.
Students who think they have sufficient
knowledge of elementary economics to
make enrollment in Economics 11
unnecessary should take this exam at one
of the times listed above. Please sign
up outside the Economics Department
Office (315 Converse Hall) no later than
4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 23. Those
who pass will be excused from taking
Economics 11 and may go directly into
advanced courses.
Vagina Monologues is Accepting Submissions! Deadline Jan. 24

The Admission Office Fellowship
provides a recent Amherst graduate the
opportunity to be an integral part of
the Admission Office professional
staff. As part of the Admission
Committee, the fellow evaluates
applications and contributes to
admission decisions, makes on-campus
presentations to visitors and travels
to high schools and college fairs
across the country. Interested seniors

Orchestra and Band Interns Wanted to Work in Amherst Elementary Schools-- Apply by Jan. 28
Beginning this semester, the CCE is
funding Amherst College students to work
with the orchestra and band programs in
the Amherst Elementary Schools. The
orchestras and bands meet at the
following times of the week: Monday, 2-3
p.m.; Tuesday, 2-3 p.m.; Thursday,
8:45-9:45 a.m., 10:30-11:30 a.m. and
3:30-4:30 p.m. (orchestra only).
Students would have to commit to one (or
more) rehearsal time(s) during the week
for the semester. All Amherst College
string, woodwind, brass and percussion
players are eligible to be involved in
this initiative. Interested students
should contact Professor Schneider by
e-mail (deschneider@amherst.edu) on or before Jan. 28 to set
up an interview.
