In the inaugural annual Amherst Lecture in Philosophy, David Velleman describes how "Parfit meets the Buddha" and uses the novel Slaughterhouse Five to draw out a theory that certain human suffering can be resolved by giving up the twin illusions of the enduring self and the passage of time.
